Henry Dunant, a Swiss businessman, was present at the battle of Solferino, Italy, 1859 and witnessed the horrors of war. Returning to Geneva, he wrote A Memory of Solferino, which eventually led to the creation of the International Committee for Relief to the Wounded, the predecessor of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and to the adoption of the first Geneva Convention.
